Many of our art deco bronzes are on display in our gallery. It’s a large warehouse open to the public full of goodies from art deco, French antiques to English dining furniture. The showroom is spread across two floors and we specialise in art deco furniture, English dining furniture, Continental antiques, French furniture, bronzes, architectural antiques, porcelain, oil paintings and interiors. We are favourites with many London based interior designers. If you would like to visit our Canonbury Antiques Hertfordshire showroom please get in touch.

Hertfordshire itself is a lovely place to visit – St Alban’s is just five minutes down the road, a lovely market town with Roman ruins and a gorgeous Cathedral, as well as good shopping. The surrounding country side is beautiful so it’s well worth making a day trip around it to visit some of the beautiful towns and scenery, or even if it’s just with a nice pub lunch.

We are only 25 minutes north of London so it’s conveniently located and we hence get visitors from all over the UK (and world). Near to major London airports (Heathrow, Luton, Stanstead) and well connected by rail.

We have been in business for over fifty years now (wow, time flies) starting off with various showrooms in London, including in Islington and on the famous Westbourne Grove in Notting Hill Gate, W11. We also had a gallery on Church Street in Marylebone. As the bricks and mortar trade backed off we decided to go 100% online and now sell to a global client base from our website – and this allowed us to move to larger premises in Hertfordshire near where we live which was great for our commuting time and overall quality of live. Of course being outside London allowed us to have more stock and increase our product range so we have a large range of goods in a much bigger space than we ever could have had in our London shops. We hope you enjoy our visit to the Canonbury Antiques Hertfordshire showroom, it will definitely be an experience you won’t forget.

Chiparus Eternal Friends

Chiparus Eternal Friends

Many of these art deco bronzes are on display in our showroom. The 1920s is one of our favourite eras, particularly aesthetically in the shape of the art deco female figural form. All the masters from the 1920s – Chiparus, Preiss, Colinet, Descomps, Milo – are some of our favourite sculptors and we carry a range of their works. They look so good in contemporary settings and are also very collectible but of course always a good thing to check them out first in the Canonbury Antiques Hertfordshire showroom..

Signed Poertzel Art Deco Bronze Aristocrats Borzoi Dogs Figurine

– This is based in our Los Angeles store in the US where we will ship from – please email for shipping quotes

You are viewing a spectacular art deco bronze sculpture of a lady and two borzoi dogs. The piece is signed Poertzel on the base. Poertzel was born at Scheibe on 24th October 1876, he became one of the most prominent art deco sculptors and this, the ‘Aristocrats’ is one of his most famous works. This would be a later casting from the original with some age.

The scene somehow embodies the 1920s style aesthetic as the tall, elegant women with a Native American look takes the two borzoi hounds for a walk. The symmetry is wonderful as the sleek dogs somehow echo the lithe women, her dress fanning. The piece has been cast from different coloured bronze to dazzling affect and the patina is wonderful.

We’ve taken various close up photos so we can show you the quality of the casting – in particular on parts like her hands, face, the dogs paws and coat. Amazing. Forget cheap Asian copies this is the real deal.

She stands on the marble base which has been cut from various different coloured stones with a tiered affect. The marble is smooth and has been polished so is offered chip and flake free. This has a museum like quality to it. It is very heavy. Please also note this is based in the US where we will ship from so quotes will be from there. We bought this from a dealer in Les Halles Paris whilst on a recent French buying trip.

It’s an important work and could be yours so get your bids in early as she won’t be hanging around for long

TANG CHINESE WATER BUFFALOW AND CONFUCIANISM SCHOLAR

TANG CHINESE WATER BUFFALOW AND CONFUCIANISM SCHOLAR

TANG CHINESE WATER BUFFALOW AND CONFUCIANISM SCHOLAR

You are viewing a wonderful sculpture of a Chinese scholar of Confucianism sitting on the back of a water buffalow. The piece is cast from brown bronze and is Tang in style due to the intricate patterns etched and painted in gold on the surface of the brown bronze depicting at times Chinese symbols and patterns, some almost Celtic in style and design. These are hand painted so you can imagine the level of craftmanship that has gone into this particular piece, not to say the time taken.

It’s a wonderful study and depicts the serene looking scholar with his book open as this faithful water buffalo leads him around. He is believed to be a scholar of Confucianism due to the fact he is travelling and would be spreading the word of Confucius.

This would make a unique decorative item for your home and its a wonderful study. The bronze is hollow cast so not too heavy and it has a lovely patina to it.

Historiography was an interest of Chinese scholars from very early times, and it was invested with the task of conveying applicable lessons for human life. The lessons of history were an integral part of all Chinese learning, an attitude strongly emphasized by Confucius, who stressed the importance of exemplary history and the keeping of authentic records. The Shujing (Book of History), containing documents from the early and middle Zhou dynasty (c. 1122-256 bc), and the Chunqiu (Spring and Autumn Annals), chronicling the history of Confucius’s home state of Lu between 722 and 481 bc, were two of the Five Classics of Confucianism.

The Tang dynasty saw a tremendous cultural flowering. Tang institutions and culture were adopted and imitated in Korea and Japan, while Tang culture benefited from the cosmopolitan influences of the far-flung empire. Chinese Buddhism reached its highpoint under the early Tang, with the celebrated pilgrim Xuanzang bringing back Buddhist sutras from India in the mid-7th century; Islam, Manichaeism, and even Judaism were also represented in Tang China. Tang Buddhist missionaries were immensely important to the spread of the religion in Japan and Korea.

Being bronze this will last forever without rusting and hence is a great investment as it will always appreciate in value. Aside from being aesthetically pleasing and nice to look at they can also become heirlooms.

Bronze is any of several alloys consisting mainly of copper and tin. Neither ancient nor modern bronzes consist only of these two metals. Zinc, lead, and silver were added to bronze alloys by Greek and Roman founders for use in tools, weapons, coins, and objects of art. Zinc, lead, and other metals are occasionally present in modern bronze.

Related to the African water buffalo, yak, American bison, European bison, and four-horned antelope, the Asian water buffalo, Bubalus bubalis, has been domesticated and is now found throughout India, Asia, South America, Europe, and southern Africa.
